If you do get it, I would definitely play. I have the server set up too. I even played yesterday with a couple friends.
It's definitely a basic game for quick action and satisfying kills. The game is based on the UT2k4 engine and started out as a mod for Red Orchestra (also based on UT2k4). So that's an idea of what the graphics will be like.
The game play is similar to L4D and Raven Shield: Rainbow Hunt. You fend off waves of monsters with the occasional slow motion kill (random). The tactics involved are mostly individual awesomeness at killing monsters but also communicating on a safe place to defend. As with Rainbow Hunt, players should cover different approaches and decide on an area with the best choke point and a good escape route.
There are 7 player classes: Medic - Healing tool recharges faster and heals more than other classes. Support - Deals more damage with shotguns and welds doors faster. Sharpshooter - Receives discounts on sniper type weapons and does more head shot damage. Commando - Sees invisible monsters and enemy health. Good with automatic rifles. Berserker - Melee attacker. Firebug - Deals more fire damage with flamethrower. Grenades can set monsters on fire. Demolitions - Carry more pipe bombs (more like proximity mines) and does more damage with explosive weapons (grenades, M79, etc.)
I think this game is more fun than L4D. I never picked up L4D2 because this was out. There are plenty of custom maps and they get downloaded when connecting to the server. You can level up your classes by doing the class specific actions. So if you heal, you gain experience for your medic class regardless of whatever class you are currently using.
After the last wave, you have to kill the boss monster that created all the other monsters. This requires communication to let the team know which direction he is coming and to maximize firepower on him at the same time. It's different from the waves because you can't run and shoot at the monsters chasing you. You have to coordinate and take down the boss quickly or he kills the team one player at a time.
Killing Floor usually goes on sale during holidays. It was $5 over Christmas and I think around Thanksgiving it was $15. So you can hold out if you really want but $20 is a pretty good deal for a defense type game.
