ARMA II works well on its own, Op Arrowhead works on its own but best of all they both work together in Combined Operations. As a group we probably won't ever play OA on its own, there's no point.
In a nutshell you'll absolutely love these games and I see no reason why the British Forces add-on will be any different. Arguably the British Forces add-on is a reskinning job packaged as downloadable content, tbh though I don't mind at all, BI have given more than enough access to modders over the years so I'm happy to give them some more of my cash.
On the mods front there are some really cool mods out there but the original arma versions have all been replaced. ACE 2 is superb as a top level mod and is porting to OA Combined Ops. The new ACRE mod (check the forum) is brilliant and adds a level of realism not seen before on the comms front. Your right to be excited knowing your gaming preferences it even sounds exciting writing about it  Some small additions like the fire team hud by shacktac and various effects mods etc make it a grand package.
You need ARMA II and Operation Arrowhead but don't get them off steam even if they're on offer, check out Play.com.
In short buy your rig get it set up and get online ASAP.
